What to watch for:
Early (first 1-2 weeks):
- Runny or stuffed-up nose
- Persistent mild cough
- A pause in breathing in babies
Later (after 1-2 weeks):
- Spasmodic coughing fits
- vomiting
Whooping Cough can lead to:
Babies younger than one year old may develop:
- Pneumonia
- Brain damage
- Seizures
Since 2010, up to 20 babies have died each year from whooping cough in the United States.
How to avoid it
- Children should get five doses of DTaP for best protection, one each at the following ages: 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 15 – 18 months, 4 – 6 years
- Pregnant women should get a Tdap shot in their third trimester
- Up-to-date immunization for anyone who will be in contact with your baby
