What to watch for:
Early (first 1-2 weeks):
Runny or stuffed-up nose
Persistent mild cough
A pause in breathing in babies
Later (after 1-2 weeks):
Spasmodic coughing fits
vomiting
Whooping Cough can lead to:
Babies younger than one year old may develop:
Pneumonia
Brain damage
Seizures
Since 2010, up to 20 babies have died each year from whooping cough in the United States.
How to avoid it
Children should get five doses of DTaP for best protection, one each at the following ages: 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 15 – 18 months, 4 – 6 years
Pregnant women should get a Tdap shot in their third trimester
Up-to-date immunization for anyone who will be in contact with your baby
